Experience

Principal Software Engineer

CarMax - Catalog
Oct 2017 - Nov 2024 Richmond, Virginia

The Commerce Catalog team is building the next generation platform for supporting a CarMax marketplace. With a background in platforms and services, I am using my previous experience in building and supporting our existing engines behind carmax.com (search, store and vehicle services) to empower our consumers with a flexible and robust new platform that will support merchandising not just vehicles and services but open up opportunities for parts, auctions and any other related products in the future.

As a core team member and principal software engineer, I have contributed towards:

  • Architectural design decisions concerning schemas, cloud platform, data ingestion, batching, monitoring and alerting
  • API features for search, vehicle, store, and many other services along with unit and integration tests in C#, .Net, and Node
  • Internal sites to monitor metrics, service bus messages, and DLQs; purge and reseed mechanisms along with invoking batch jobs, vehicle research, history, and management, in React and C#
  • Azure infrastructure-as-code and pipelines-as-code that use ARM templates for our resources and CI/CD pipelines in YAML and Bicep
  • Logging telemetry, application log ingestion into Splunk, building alerts, and integration into PagerDuty for on-call alerting
  • Building in-memory, Redis, & edge caching and invalidation mechanisms via service buses and HTTP requests

Other achievements:

  • Owned, operated and handed-off ownership of JFrog Artifactory and TeamCity CI/CD tools
  • 2022 CarMax Innovation Garage first prize winning team member
  • 2019 CarMax Innovation Garage team lead - ideated, formed a team, coordinated project, and presented

As a principal software engineer, my responsibilities include making architectural decisions, task grooming and prioritizing, taking a larger role in reviewing pull requests, mentoring and interviewing along with hands-on work in building applications and on-call rotations.
